Jerral
Derryberry
Artist
Statement
“The goal of my
works is to produce an image
that pulls the viewer’s mind into the painting,
holding it there, generating a positive and uplifting emotional response.
The two most reached for emotional experiences being a sense of
peacefulness and delightful discovery.”
Biography
Jerral Derryberry
grew up in small towns in Texas, Colorado and
West
Virginia.
His formal
education was in architecture, having earned his Bachelor of Architecture
degree from University of Texas at Austin. The training
he received in architectural illustration techniques, casein, gauche and
watercolor gave him the means to work his way through college and also
were the first steps toward his future as a fine artist.
Jerral became a
corporate architect in Houston, Texas, working on major high-rise, hotel
and shopping center projects. Later, he owned his own design and graphics
firm principally serving the yachting community of the Galveston Bay
area. During this period he continued to pursue his love for painting and
produced many works.
In the 80’s
through
the late 90’s, he relocated to Taos and Santa Fe New Mexico, where he
concentrated his efforts on studying
the oil painting techniques of the great New Mexico impressionist
masters. It was during this period
that he began painting primarily plein
air subjects and selling his paintings in galleries, juried shows
and
exhibitions.
Over the past few
years, Jerral has had the privilege of being in demand as a teacher and
has developed a following of students who share his passion for studying
the subjects of color theory, composition and
structure.
In the years 1999
through 2001, he focused efforts on entering competitions, and as a
result, his works received many regional, national and best of show
awards, including the H.K.Holbein Merit Award for Excellence in Art, the
Winsor Newton Award and the Outdoor Painter’s Society Plein Air Award.
His work has been
published in Southwest Art Magazine, Art of the West,
Art Gallery International Magazine, Southwind
Magazine and Dallas Bar
Association’s Headnotes.
Jerral is a
juried member of the New York Salmagundi Club and numerous other art
associations.
Jerral enjoys
traveling extensively throughout the western states to paint en plein air,
producing studies from which he creates his larger studio pieces. He also
creates studio works inspired by his admiration for the Taos
impressionists. In addition, he enjoys painting and traveling to Scotland
with a group of nationally known painters to sketch and paint in
preparation for the Annual Castles and Clans Exhibition at Loch Vale Fine
Art, Estes Park, Colorado.
His work is
currently represented and sold in fine art galleries and regional and
national juried exhibitions and is nationally and internationally
collected for both private and corporate collections.
